United Way of Tampa Bay and the
West Central Florida Federation of Labor

The United Way of Tampa Bay and the West Central Florida Federation of Labor formed a local partnership in January of 1991 and hired an AFL-CIO Community Services Liaison to implement the AFL-CIO’s Community Services Program. The five key elements of the program are:

  • Build local unions and capacity for the Central Labor Council (CLC)
  • Improve public and private support systems for workers and their families
  • Provide services to workers and their families
  • Provide services to the community at large
  • Improve the social and economic conditions of working families to reduce their need for services and assistance.

Service to the Community
Through our local partnership we work together to involve organized labor and the community in these and other yearly initiatives:

  • Letter Carriers Food Drive
United Way and Labor help stock the world’s largest one day food drive, started by the National Association of Letter Carriers with strong support within the US Postal Service
  • Prosperity Campaign
Increase awareness of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), a tax credit that low income individuals can earn, and provide free income tax preparation
  • Cover the Uninsured Week and KidCare
Promote health care education, and distribute KidCare information to working families
  • Thanksgiving Food Drive
Coordinate a food drive among members for local food banks.
  • Holiday Toy Drive
United Way and Labor's annual toy drive for underprivileged children in our community
  • On Site United Way Help Talks
Hurricane Preparedness, United Way partner guest speakers
    Labor Day Picnic Event
West Central Florida Federation of Labor’s annual Labor Day event to celebrate Labor’s history and showcase Labor’s contributions to the community.

  • Union Day of Caring
Union members volunteer to spend a Saturday working at a local United Way partner agency, and learn first hand how their United Way donations impact the community.
  • The Annual United Way Campaign
Recognizing the vital importance of United Way programs and services to union member, their families, and those in need, the West Central Florida Federation of Labor actively supports the annual United Way campaign. Click here to view Union endorsement letters.

The following are good techniques to involve organized labor in your United Way campaign:

  • If there is a labor union in your organization, contact the union president and ask them to partner with you in the campaign
  • Secure a letter of co-endorsement from the local union and post it in prominent places \
  • Select a labor co-chair for the campaign
  • Include labor in the planning of the campaign
  • Involve stewards as campaign ambassadors
  • Ensure that ambassadors have necessary time off to tour United Way impact partner agencies, attend events and encourage co-workers to participate in the campaign
  • Recognize and thank all employees during events and at the end of the campaign
