A New Strategy: Community Impact Agenda
Over the past couple years, United Way has embarked on a new strategy we call our Community Impact Agenda. In short, this agenda is a call to action for United Way to expand its work and role in community to not only help individuals and families, but to also provide leadership to bring the community together to change community conditions, such as unemployment, poverty, the lack of affordable child care, and adult illiteracy.
New Roles and New Opportunities
This move to a Community Impact Agenda affects everything we do. To be successful at changing community conditions, United Way is increasing its leadership to mobilize volunteers on a year round basis and will be launching a year round Days of Caring program in September, 2006. We are committed to being more strategic and active in community planning and partnerships. And we are working harder to generate more resources (money, in-kind, time) that can be leveraged to create positive impacts throughout the community.
Family Well-Being Agenda
In November, 2005, United Way’s Board of Directors approved the adoption of its Family Well-Being Agenda, which includes three Focus Areas: Adult Education, Workforce Participation, and Child Care.Family Well-Being exists when families
- Have sufficient resources to provide for their daily living needs and plan for the future.
- Are able to obtain education and training that provide opportunity for advancement
- Are engaged in activities and supports that promote a functional level of health and wellness
Adult Education Adult Education is about building capacities in families. This means helping individuals gain education and learning and skills that will assist them in finding and sustaining meaningful employment as well as participate more fully in community life.
Workforce Participation Work Force Readiness and Participation is about helping people become more employable and find and sustain employment that offers living wages and provides families with sufficient resources to not only subsist but prosper.
Child Care Child Care is about ensuring that parents have access to quality and affordable child care so that they can participate in the work force.
United Way is currently working with a cadre of volunteers to increase understanding of community issues and challenges related to Family Well-Being, and through the work of three Impact Teams (one per Focus Area), a long-term Family Well-Being plan is being developed, which will address the following:
- The determination of priority outcomes
- Partnership and collaborative opportunities
- Best practice guidance
- Community Engagement strategies
- Investment strategies and processes
- Evaluation
Creating Impact with our Partner Agencies
While United Way builds Family and Well-Being strategies and initiatives, our important work with United Way's Partner Agencies continues to make a difference in the lives of people each and every day.We continue to lead the community in building partnerships and leveraging resources to address a wide variety of issues including:
- caring for the elderly
- helping youth
- promoting health and independence
- strengthening families and
- providing food helping citizens who are lacking basic essential needs
When you invest your dollars or your time, your help is magnified by the contributions of others bringing about measurable change in our community.
Hurricane Relief Fund United Way continues to be ready to provide help and support to local communities and beyond when a hurricane strikes. In addition to administering a special fund for hurricane victims, United Way mobilizes volunteers and in-kind resources, wherever necessary, to lend a hand.
