Neighborly Care Network began in 1966, when a group of concerned citizens started discussing the needs of a growing senior population. The Neighborly Center, Inc. was chartered that year as a nonprofit agency, with a mission of studying and fulfilling the needs of seniors in Pinellas County. |
|
In 1968, Neighborly started the first federally funded Meals on Wheels program in the United States. At that time, approximately 100 elderly in St. Petersburg received the meals daily. Today, an average of 1,472 frail, homebound seniors in Pinellas County receive nutritious meals daily through the Neighborly Care Network Nutrition program.
Also in 1968, Neighborly opened the first Adult Day Care Center in the nation in St. Petersburg, serving eight clients. Today, Neighborly has four Adult Day Care Centers, and the program serves approximately 335 seniors in Pinellas County.
Neighborly Care Network’s Day Care meets the individual needs of the functionally impaired adult at risk of premature or inappropriate institutionalization. Transportation services provide scheduled, five-day-a-week door-to-door transportation for seniors and disabled adults to life sustaining services such as day care, senior dining, grocery and medical facilities. The Nutrition program provides meals to the homebound and isolated elderly population. |
